In the “lazy-aging” approach, life is sometimes compared to a ship.
The size of the ship represents the scope of your possibilities.
When you’re young, it’s like a large cruiser, capable of sailing across the open seas.
As time goes on, the ship may gradually become smaller, and eventually, one day, it comes ashore and the journey ends.
Before adulthood, you’re not yet the captain of your own ship—you’re on board someone else’s, learning how things work.
But once you grow up, you take the helm. You become the captain, responsible for navigating your own life.
So, in this metaphor, what role does a dietitian play?
Think of them as the lookout at the top of the mast, scanning the horizon with a telescope.
They’re there to spot what lies ahead—whether your current course is safe, if there are obstacles in the distance, or if there might be a better way around them—and report that back to you.
That’s their role.
You, as the captain, know your ship better than anyone else. The final decisions are always yours.
At the same time, when it comes to seeing what’s far ahead, the lookout often has a clearer view.
In both sailing and real life, there’s usually a destination you want to reach.
And when obstacles appear, you don’t simply turn back and give up. You find ways to navigate around them.
That’s where the lookout’s perspective becomes useful.
It’s true that dietitians can sometimes come across as a bit persistent, and people may tune them out.
But even so, it’s worth at least hearing what they have to say.
Because if a captain only realizes there was an iceberg after hitting it, they may lose parts of the ship.
Over time, the ship becomes smaller, and it becomes harder to travel far.
Of course, even a smaller ship can still offer its own kind of journey. That doesn’t mean life is over.
But when you see others your age still sailing boldly with larger ships…
